India’s top court sets up safety task force

India’s Supreme Court has established a hospital safety task force to recommend measures for protecting medical workers, following the assault and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata on August 9, which sparked national outrage and protests by junior doctors. A police volunteer has been arrested, and the federal police are now investigating the crime. The court directed a federal paramilitary force to secure the hospital and suggested reforms like separate resting rooms for female staff and improved campus security. Despite these measures, junior doctors are continuing their protests, citing the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the healthcare system. The Supreme Court urged doctors to resume work, assuring them of efforts to ensure their safety. This incident has renewed focus on the persistent issue of sexual violence against women in India, despite tougher laws enacted after the 2012 Delhi gang rape case.
