Rahul Gandhi has returned to India’s parliament following a Supreme Court ruling, bolstering his Congress party and the opposition ahead of a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The vote is unlikely to impact Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with its strong majority. Gandhi’s return is set to strengthen the voice of the newly formed 26-party opposition alliance led by Congress. Lawmakers will debate and vote on the government’s performance from Tuesday to Thursday. Gandhi, part of a prominent political family, was convicted in March but the Supreme Court suspended the conviction, enabling his return and candidacy in next year’s elections.
