India reports Nipah virus cases as neighbors step up screening

An outbreak of Nipah virus has been reported in West Bengal, India, prompting local authorities to quarantine around 100 people, with one patient in critical condition, according to the Independent.

Thailand has increased disease prevention at major airports, screening travelers from West Bengal. First identified in Malaysia in 1998, Nipah is a deadly zoonotic virus carried mainly by fruit bats and can spread via contaminated food or human-to-human contact. No specific treatment or vaccine currently exists.
