India strongly opposes the recent U.S. tariff hikes, which impose up to 50% duties on Indian exports as part of an escalating trade dispute. The U.S. added a 25% tariff on India’s goods, plus another 25% as punishment for continuing to buy Russian oil, a move India calls unfair and a double standard since other Russian oil importers were spared.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that protecting Indian farmers, livestock rearers, and fishermen is a top priority and said he is willing to bear personal costs to defend their interests. The U.S. has pressured India to open its market to genetically modified crops and U.S. farm products, but India rejects these demands, considering the welfare of its large farming population non-negotiable.
Some Indian politicians, like opposition MP Shashi Tharoor, are urging retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, signaling readiness for a tougher stance in the trade conflict.
