India has proposed retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in response to Washington’s 25% tariff on automobiles and auto parts, which could impact $2.89 billion of Indian exports. India stated it would impose duties equal to the $725 million in tariffs the U.S. is collecting but did not specify which goods would be targeted. While India is open to lowering some tariffs for the U.S., it refuses to open its agriculture and dairy sectors or accept pressure to meet the U.S.-set July 9 deadline for a trade deal. Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that deals must align with national interest, not imposed timelines. In 2024, U.S.-India trade totaled $129 billion, with a U.S. trade deficit of $45.7 billion. India’s exports to the U.S. rose significantly between April and May this year.
