India and Pakistan traded drone and missile strikes on Saturday, escalating tensions along the border and in Kashmir.
India accused Pakistan of launching attacks using drones, missiles, and jets on civilian and military areas across more than 26 locations. Indian forces responded with airstrikes on Pakistani bases. Explosions were reported overnight in Indian-controlled Kashmir, Punjab, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.
At least five people, including a child, were killed, bringing the civilian death toll in Indian-controlled Kashmir to 22. Blackouts were enforced in several cities near the border.
The conflict follows Indian strikes earlier in the week, which New Delhi said were in response to a deadly attack by gunmen in Kashmir. Pakistan denies involvement.
Pakistan has closed its airspace until May 11. India rejected Pakistan’s claims of damage to its military facilities, calling them false.
