Indian police detained more than 2,000 protesters and the founder of a youth-led movement in New Delhi on Saturday as authorities tightened security ahead of a planned rally demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, was aimed at revisions to voter lists that critics say could unfairly benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. Police and paramilitary forces were deployed across the capital, while mobile internet services were suspended in parts of the city.
The Election Commission says the revisions are intended to remove duplicate and outdated voter records, but critics warn that millions of eligible voters could be excluded. The United Nations urged Indian authorities to address public concerns through meaningful dialogue, while the government maintained that peaceful assembly is subject to reasonable restrictions. The protests also reflect wider frustration among young people over unemployment, exam paper leaks and political representation, with a report finding that graduate unemployment among Indians aged 15 to 25 was nearly 40%.
