In Rayanpet, India, unpredictable weather patterns and rising temperatures are negatively affecting rice farming. Local farmer P. Ravinder Reddy notes that rains used to be predictable, but now extremes in weather often cause seeds to fail. To combat this, Indian agricultural researchers are developing climate-resilient rice seeds that require less water and resist disease. Reddy has been experimenting with these seeds, which are yielding better results. As climate change threatens farmers’ livelihoods, the government is promoting these resilient seeds. However, more funding and better access for farmers are needed for widespread adoption.
