Researchers from Israel, the U.S., and Google have found that the human brain processes spoken language in a stepwise sequence similar to advanced AI models, according to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Published in Nature Communications, the study shows early brain responses align with AI’s shallow layers, while deeper layers correspond to complex meaning processing, particularly in Broca’s area.
The findings suggest language understanding emerges gradually from context, challenging traditional rule-based theories. The team has released its dataset to support further research on how the brain deciphers natural speech.
