Huawei unveils Pura 80 Ultra with new ‘one sensor, two lenses’ camera

Huawei has launched its new flagship smartphone, the Pura 80 Ultra, featuring a major innovation in mobile photography: a “one sensor, two lenses” system. This allows a 3.7x and 9.4x telephoto lens to share a 1/1.28-inch sensor, improving image quality and light intake while saving space.

The camera system includes Huawei’s “Red Maple” technology for enhanced color accuracy. Parts for the camera come from OFILM Group, a former Apple supplier, and SmartSens, showing China’s growing domestic supply chain strength.

Internally, the Pura 80 Ultra uses the Kirin 9020 chip, which was also seen in the Mate 70 series. While it’s made using older tech and has lower performance than competitors, it runs on HarmonyOS Next 5.1, which supports live AI conversations. A more advanced version, HarmonyOS Next 6.0, is expected later in 2025 with improved smartphone-vehicle integration.

The phone is priced at 9,999 yuan (around $1,400). While it matches the price of its predecessor, the Pura 70 Art, many Chinese users have criticized Huawei for rising prices and expressed nostalgia for more affordable models like the Honor V30 Pro.
