Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for faster progress in science and technology innovation, saying it will play a central role in driving China’s modernization and future development. His remarks came during a major science and technology meeting in Beijing, which brought together national science award winners, members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Xi emphasized the need to strengthen China’s self-reliance in key technologies, improve innovation capabilities, and develop more scientific talent. He said the 2026–2030 period will be a critical stage for advancing China’s goal of becoming a leading global science and technology power by 2035.
The meeting also recognized leading researchers, including recipients of China’s top science and technology award, highlighting fields such as advanced materials and electronic technology as part of the country’s innovation strategy.
