How Xi Jinping inspires youth to grow with the nation, connect with the world

Young people in China are being encouraged to take active roles in national development, especially at the grassroots level. One example is Yang Na, who returned to her hometown in Liaoning after university instead of pursuing opportunities in major cities. She now works in village leadership, helping develop local agriculture, tourism, and cultural projects while addressing everyday rural issues. Her contributions earned her recognition through national youth awards.

Ahead of China’s Youth Day, Xi Jinping sent a message to young award recipients, encouraging them to stay dedicated to their work, connect their personal ambitions with the country’s future, and contribute during the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan period from 2026 to 2030. The message reflects Xi’s long-standing emphasis on supporting and guiding young people through letters, conversations, and public engagements.

The report also focuses on volunteer teachers in Xinjiang who have improved educational outcomes in a rural border-area school through China’s “Go West” volunteer program. The young team, many in their early twenties, helped dramatically raise student performance and received national recognition for their efforts. Inspired by encouragement from Xi, several volunteers chose to continue their service.

The piece also highlights China’s efforts to build international youth connections. Through educational and cultural exchanges, including activities marking the anniversary of Ping-Pong Diplomacy, young people from the United States have been invited to visit China and learn more about the country firsthand. American student Andra described gaining a new understanding of China’s technological and social development during her visit and said the experience motivated her to promote friendship and cultural understanding between the two countries.
