The World Health Organization has issued new guidelines to reduce the risk of Nipah virus infection, assessing the threat as moderate at the sub-national level and low at national, regional and global levels. The guidance emphasizes preventing bat-to-human transmission by avoiding contaminated food, reducing animal-to-human spread through protective measures when handling livestock, and strengthening outbreak controls on pig farms.
The WHO also stressed limiting human-to-human transmission through early medical care, hygiene and avoiding close contact with infected individuals, while urging strict infection-control measures in healthcare settings. Authorities said these steps are crucial in the absence of specific treatments, as countries continue to monitor the situation and enhance preventive screening at points of entry.
