China is marking the Double Ninth Festival on Sunday, a traditional occasion that celebrates respect and care for older people. Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized that supporting the elderly is a shared responsibility, including during a visit to an elderly care service center in Beijing earlier this year.
China is also expanding its elderly care services as its population ages. By the end of 2025, the country had more than 323 million people aged 60 and above, accounting for 23 percent of its population. Under its 2026–2030 development plan, China aims to improve community care facilities and upgrade public elderly care institutions. So far, the country has established 860,000 elderly meal-service sites and renovated 2.24 million homes for vulnerable older people.
