How China, Pakistan take South-South collaboration to deep space

China and Pakistan have steadily expanded their space cooperation from satellite projects to astronaut training and lunar exploration, making it one of the most notable examples of South-South cooperation in the aerospace sector.

A major milestone came in April when two Pakistani candidates, Muhammad Zeeshan Ali and Khurram Daud, were selected for China’s space station astronaut training program. According to the China Manned Space Agency, one of them could become the first foreign astronaut to visit China’s space station.

The partnership has also extended to deep-space exploration. In 2024, Pakistan’s CubeSat traveled aboard China’s Chang’e-6 mission, marking Pakistan’s first involvement in lunar exploration. The two countries have also signed cooperation agreements related to the International Lunar Research Station and future payload cooperation on the upcoming Chang’e-8 mission.

Pakistan was also the first foreign country to fully adopt China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System for commercial applications, including agriculture, transportation and disaster monitoring.

Chinese launch providers have additionally helped Pakistan deploy several communication and remote-sensing satellites in recent years, further deepening bilateral aerospace cooperation.
