The Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, held in Beijing on October 13-14, seeks to revitalize the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and accelerate global gender equality. The meeting, attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, addresses global challenges even as a UN report warns that progress on gender equality is severely off track. Over the past 30 years, China has made significant progress in advancing “her power,” lifting millions of women from poverty, increasing their presence in the workforce and judiciary, and enshrining gender equality as a basic national policy. Internationally, China has provided substantial support, including donations to UN Women and establishing the Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education. UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous noted that China’s experience offers valuable lessons for the world in meeting these critical goals.
