Flights at London’s Heathrow Airport resumed late Friday after a fire at a nearby substation caused a power outage, forcing the airport to shut down for a day. The disruption stranded tens of thousands of passengers and affected global travel.
Heathrow had planned to handle 1,351 flights carrying nearly 291,000 passengers, but many flights were diverted or returned to their departure points. Limited flights operated on Friday to reposition aircraft, with full operations expected to resume by Saturday morning.
Heathrow’s CEO apologized for the inconvenience, while authorities stated the fire was not considered suspicious. Investigations are ongoing, focusing on electrical distribution equipment.
