Heartbroken Brits abandon pets as living costs bite

Animal shelters in the UK are seeing a sharp rise in abandoned pets as owners struggle with the cost of living. At Mayhew, a shelter in west London, over 130 animals have been taken in this year alone.

Elvira Meucci-Lyons, head of the shelter, said many people are heartbroken and ashamed when they give up their pets, often because they can no longer afford food or vet bills.

Across the UK, the RSPCA reports a 32% rise in pet abandonments this year compared to 2024, with over 5,700 cases already. Last year saw over 22,000 cases—many linked to post-pandemic financial hardship.

Some owners, having lost their homes or income, are forced to choose between feeding themselves or their pets. Staff say more animals are arriving in poor health due to unaffordable vet care.

Mayhew offers food packages and free treatments to help owners, but the demand is overwhelming. “Every day is heartbreaking,” said Meucci-Lyons.
