Harvard University has reaffirmed its stance to “not surrender its independence” following renewed pressure from the Trump administration. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) warned that Harvard could lose its ability to enroll foreign students unless it complies with requests to share visa-related data and records of alleged misconduct.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem also canceled over $2.7 million in federal grants and demanded detailed records by April 30. Additionally, the administration is reviewing $9 billion in contracts, has frozen $2.3 billion in funding, and is moving to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status.
The crackdown is linked to campus protests against U.S. support for Israel, which the Trump administration labels as extremist. Critics argue these actions threaten academic freedom and free speech. Other universities like Columbia and Princeton are also facing similar federal action.
