Harvard University filed a lawsuit on Monday to stop the Trump administration from freezing billions in federal funding. The university says the move is punishment for rejecting government demands that would threaten its independence.
The lawsuit, filed in Boston, claims the Trump administration is using funding as a way to pressure Harvard into changing its academic policies. It argues this violates Harvard’s free speech rights under the First Amendment.
President Trump has criticized top universities, including Harvard, for how they handled pro-Palestinian protests and for allegedly allowing antisemitism on campus. He began a review of Harvard’s $9 billion in federal funds in March, later freezing $2.3 billion and threatening further actions.
The administration’s demands included banning masks on campus and ending diversity programs. Harvard is the first university to sue in response.
University President Alan Garber said Harvard opposes hate and follows anti-discrimination laws, but the government is trying to control who the school can hire and teach.
Other universities like Columbia, Princeton, and Brown have also had some funding paused.
