Hamas gave Israel a body on Friday, claiming it was Shiri Bibas, an Israeli hostage, after mistakenly handing over the wrong body earlier. Israeli forensic teams are now checking if it is really her.
Hamas had agreed to return Shiri Bibas, her two sons (Kfir and Ariel), and another hostage (Oded Lifshitz) as part of a ceasefire deal. But when Israel received the bodies, one was an unknown woman instead of Shiri Bibas, causing tension. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu threatened retaliation, saying Israel would bring home all hostages and make Hamas pay for violating the deal.
Hamas previously claimed Shiri and her children were killed in an Israeli airstrike, while Israel said intelligence suggests the children were deliberately killed by Hamas. The U.N. has called for an investigation into their deaths.
This mix-up has put pressure on the fragile ceasefire deal, which was negotiated with help from the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt.
