Hamas hands over more bodies as outlook for Trump’s Gaza peace plan darkens

Hamas handed over more bodies of deceased Israeli hostages to Israel on Tuesday, signaling limited progress in a fragile ceasefire deal following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of his plan to end the Gaza war. The transfer came after Israel halved the number of humanitarian aid trucks entering Gaza, accusing Hamas of violating the agreement by delaying the return of hostage remains.

At the same time, Hamas fighters reasserted control in Gaza, deploying security forces and executing alleged Israeli collaborators. Trump warned Hamas to disarm or face U.S. military action, while Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated that the war would not end until Hamas surrendered its weapons and control of Gaza.

So far, Hamas has returned eight of the 28 deceased hostages, leaving 19 presumed dead and one missing. Israel received four coffins on Tuesday via the Red Cross for identification.

Aid to Gaza remains restricted, worsening famine conditions affecting over half a million Palestinians. Plans to open the Egypt border for medical evacuations have been delayed.

Analysts say Trump’s peace plan faces serious obstacles. Key sticking points include Israel’s refusal to fully withdraw troops from Gaza and Hamas’s unwillingness to disarm, deepening mistrust between both sides. Experts warn the ceasefire risks becoming just a temporary truce and prisoner exchange, rather than a lasting peace agreement.
