Hamas said it supports a Gaza ceasefire deal if it includes a permanent end to fighting, full Israeli withdrawal, and a prisoner exchange. A Hamas team went to Cairo for talks with Egyptian and Qatari mediators. On the same day, Hamas released a video of Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander, who criticized Israel for not securing his release. Israel’s prime minister responded, saying efforts to free hostages are ongoing.
The previous ceasefire ended on March 1, and talks for a new one are stalled. Since March 18, Israel has resumed airstrikes in Gaza, killing over 1,500 people. Israel says it plans to expand operations across Gaza, including in Rafah.
Palestinians in Gaza are facing severe hunger, and humanitarian aid has been blocked since early March. Gaza’s media office accused Israel of destroying vital infrastructure and using water as a weapon. The UN has warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis, with children going hungry and supplies running out.
