Guinea-Bissau’s transitional president, Horta Inta-A, has appointed a new cabinet following the military’s removal of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. The new government includes 23 ministries and five secretariats of state, with key posts going to figures aligned with Embalo’s political camp. Joao Bernardo Vieira was named foreign minister, Mamasaliu Embalo interior minister, and former foreign minister Carlos Pinto Pereira justice minister. Earlier, Inta-A also appointed a new armed forces chief and a prime minister.
The military seized power on Wednesday, claiming it acted to prevent political instability, and installed Inta-A as transitional president for a one-year period. Presidential election results, originally expected on Thursday, remain pending.
