Greenlandic PM condemns U.S. for its ‘condescending and divisive aim’

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Monday sharply criticized the United States for what he described as a “condescending and divisive” approach toward Greenland, warning that continued U.S. pressure is unacceptable. In a statement issued ahead of an emergency session of Greenland’s parliament, the Inatsisartut, Nielsen said Greenland has faced sustained strain over the past 14 months due to repeated U.S. statements expressing interest in acquiring the territory. While Washington has recently disavowed the possibility of a military takeover, Nielsen said the United States continues to pursue Greenland’s attachment to and governance by the U.S., rhetoric he noted comes not only from President Donald Trump but also from other senior U.S. officials and allies. He reaffirmed that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and rejected any attempts to undermine that status. Despite the tensions, Nielsen said Greenland has opened dialogue with the United States through high-level official channels and will seek to translate those talks into concrete outcomes.
