December 13 is China’s National Memorial Day honoring the victims of the Nanjing Massacre. On this day in 1937, Japanese forces captured Nanjing and carried out mass atrocities over six weeks, killing more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers. The year 2025 also marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. As of December 2025, only 24 survivors of the Nanjing Massacre remain alive.
