A new Google Cloud survey shows that nearly nine in ten videogame developers are now using artificial intelligence to cut costs and speed up production, following mass layoffs in the industry. Developers say AI helps automate repetitive work like coding, audio, and text processing, allowing more time for creative tasks. About 44 percent are already using AI agents to optimize content, while 94 percent believe the technology will reduce overall development costs in the long run.
However, the shift is controversial. Many in the gaming world worry about job security, intellectual property disputes, and ownership of AI-generated content. These concerns echo last year’s strikes by Hollywood videogame performers and widespread studio closures that cost over 10,000 jobs. Despite challenges such as high integration costs and unclear returns on investment, the industry is expected to rebound with new premium titles and consoles, and AI is set to play an increasingly central role in that growth.
