Google and Epic Games have reached a settlement in Epic’s 2020 antitrust lawsuit over Google’s Android app store practices. The agreement includes reforms aimed at lowering fees, increasing competition, and giving more options to developers and users. Both companies filed the proposal with a federal court in San Francisco for approval by Judge James Donato, who oversaw the 2023 trial that Epic won.
Under the proposal, Google will allow easier installation of third-party app stores that meet new safety standards and let developers use alternative payment methods inside apps or through web links. Google will apply a capped service fee of 9 or 20 percent on these transactions.
Google’s Android Ecosystem president, Sameer Samat, said the changes will maintain user safety while increasing flexibility. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney praised the proposal, calling it a step toward restoring Android’s original open-platform vision.
