A 28-country study led by Chinese researchers shows that prolonged and severe droughts cause global grasslands and shrublands to break down rather than adapt. Tracking 74 sites across six continents, the study found that after four years of extreme drought, productivity losses were 2.5 times higher than in the first year.
The findings, published in Science, highlight the escalating impact of climate change on ecosystems and provide a benchmark for future research on drought effects worldwide.
