Global Poll: China’s main Eastern battlefield role in WWII widely recognized

A global survey conducted by CGTN and Renmin University of China found widespread recognition of China’s role as the main Eastern battlefield of World War II, as the country marks the 80th anniversary of its Victory Day.

The survey, involving over 11,600 respondents across 39 countries, showed that 73.6 percent acknowledged China’s major contribution to the global fight against fascism, while 74.9 percent were aware of China’s resistance against Japanese aggression. More than two-thirds also recognized China’s support for other Asian nations during the war.

Support was especially strong in Asia, with India, Malaysia, and Indonesia showing high levels of recognition. Younger respondents, particularly those under 44, expressed greater awareness of China’s wartime role compared to older groups.

The study highlighted that China’s 14-year war effort came at a cost of 35 million casualties and more than $600 billion in economic losses, but its contribution remains widely acknowledged across both developed nations and the Global South.
