The Global Initiative on AI for Health (GI-AI4H) held its annual meeting in China for the first time, bringing together health experts, policymakers and technology leaders from more than 60 countries and regions in Hangzhou. The initiative was launched by the WHO, ITU and WIPO to promote the use of AI in achieving global health goals.
AI is already being used for medical image analysis, screening for multiple diseases, predicting health conditions and tracking new medicines and medical devices. Experts at the meeting said AI can help doctors make faster and more accurate diagnoses, reduce costs and make limited healthcare resources more widely available, rather than simply replacing doctors.
The initiative focuses on developing AI standards and governance, encouraging international cooperation and investment, and turning AI technology into practical healthcare solutions. China’s experience with AI pilot programs was highlighted as a potential source of lessons for other countries, particularly those with limited healthcare resources.
