Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has demanded that the United Kingdom apologize after a BBC investigation alleged that Georgian authorities used a World War I–era chemical agent during protests last year. The Georgian government strongly denies the claim.
Kobakhidze said the BBC tried to create a false scandal and that Georgia will use all legal options to seek accountability. He announced that the government will file a complaint with the UK media regulator Ofcom and take the matter to court if necessary.
He added that Georgia has completed its own investigation into the protest events and is ready to provide full documentation to any international organization. According to the prime minister, the materials used by police were standard substances typically deployed with water cannons, not chemical agents.
