Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), described Gaza as a “graveyard” for children on World Children’s Day, highlighting the extreme suffering they face. Children in Gaza are killed, injured, displaced, and deprived of basic rights such as safety, education, and play. Many have lost an entire school year, and Lazzarini warned that they risk becoming a lost generation. In the West Bank, children also endure fear and trauma, with over 170 killed since October, and many detained in Israeli facilities. Palestinian groups called for international intervention to protect children in Gaza and the West Bank, stressing that children are the most vulnerable victims of Israeli practices, facing dire conditions, food and water shortages, arbitrary detention, and illegal trials. The Palestinian National Council condemned the ongoing violence, noting that children in Gaza are suffering from a range of horrors, including death from hunger, thirst, disease, and bombardment, with many left orphaned.
