Three years after the October 7, 2023 attack, Gaza remains without a lasting peace despite the October 2025 ceasefire. Large-scale fighting has largely stopped, but Israel, Hamas, the Palestinian Authority and the international community remain divided over security, governance and a long-term political settlement.
The Palestinian Authority is widely seen as the legitimate representative of Palestinians but lacks the ability to quickly govern Gaza after years of Hamas control. International efforts to support reconstruction also face financial and security challenges, while Gaza’s population continues to face displacement and humanitarian hardship. As a result, the ceasefire has reduced fighting but has not yet created a clear path toward lasting peace.
