The 2026 G7 Summit opened on Monday in Evian, France, under tight security and amid large-scale protests in neighboring Switzerland.
The three-day meeting is expected to focus on major global issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, tensions in the Middle East, economic growth and artificial intelligence. French President Emmanuel Macron said France would work with its allies and partners to help facilitate a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
Ahead of the summit, around 20,000 people joined an anti-G7 demonstration in Geneva, Switzerland, with some clashes reported near United Nations offices. In response, Switzerland deployed about 4,000 military personnel and closed most of its border crossings with France, while France mobilized around 16,000 police and gendarmerie officers to maintain security.
The G7 consists of the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan, with France serving as this year’s rotating chair.
