A preliminary report from India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau reveals that fuel control switches on an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner were moved from “RUN” to “CUTOFF” just before the plane crashed on June 12, killing 260 people. The report does not assign blame but includes a cockpit exchange where one pilot questions the other about cutting off fuel—who denies doing so. The aircraft, en route from Ahmedabad to London, lost altitude rapidly after the engines shut down, briefly regained power, and then issued a “Mayday” before crashing.
The crash killed 241 of 242 people onboard and 19 on the ground. One British passenger survived. The report mentions a 2018 FAA bulletin warning of possible disengagement of fuel switch locks, which Air India did not act on since it was advisory. However, the report finds no technical faults with the aircraft or engines. The investigation is ongoing, with input from U.S. and British agencies.
