Fuel shortages, hostilities threaten water supplies in Gaza: UN

The UN has issued urgent warnings over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, highlighting deadly conditions caused by ongoing Israeli attacks and a prolonged fuel blockade. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported continued violence, including attacks on civilians near aid routes. It warned that unless fuel is allowed into Gaza—particularly the north—more people, including children, will die.

Fuel is critical for water production and distribution, which affects over 2 million Palestinians. UNICEF warned that if the 100-day fuel blockade continues, children may die of thirst. Malnutrition among children is also rising sharply, with nearly 50% more admitted for treatment in May compared to April.

While a limited fuel supply was successfully obtained from Rafah to sustain essential services in the south, it’s not enough to prevent collapse. Mental health among children is deteriorating, with the UN providing emergency psychological support to thousands of children and caregivers. The WHO is also training humanitarian workers in psychological first aid.

Meanwhile, Israel has issued new evacuation orders in northern Gaza, displacing around 30,000 more people. Shelter materials remain banned, leaving many without safe housing. Of 14 humanitarian missions planned, six were blocked by Israeli authorities, including efforts to deliver fuel and recover bodies.
