China and Myanmar are deepening cooperation under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) mechanism, with both sides signing an agreement on 2026 LMC Special Fund projects in Nay Pyi Taw on May 28.
Since its launch in 2016, the LMC has supported 132 projects in Myanmar, the highest number among Mekong countries, focusing on areas such as clean water, electricity, agriculture and vocational training. In Shan State, LMC-funded water supply systems have brought safe drinking water to nearly 2,000 villagers, while solar-powered microgrids in southern Myanmar now provide round-the-clock electricity to thousands of residents.
China and Myanmar have also expanded cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. Major projects, including the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, the China-Myanmar oil and gas pipelines and the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone, have boosted connectivity and economic integration. China remains Myanmar’s largest trading partner and second-largest source of foreign investment, with bilateral trade reaching $19.4 billion in 2025, up 19.1 percent year on year.
