Nearly 2,000 pages of newly uncovered archives related to Japan’s wartime actions in China during World War II have been donated to the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders to support historical research. The documents were discovered in French diplomatic archives and donated by Bastien Ratat with assistance from Zhong Haosong.
The collection includes diplomatic records from 1920 to 1943 covering topics such as the Nanjing Massacre, Japan’s military expansion in China, and wartime conditions during the Chinese resistance against Japanese invasion. According to the memorial hall, the materials provide further evidence of wartime atrocities and international awareness of Japan’s actions at the time.
Ratat said the archives could deepen historical understanding because many of the documents were unavailable during the Tokyo Trials after World War II. The donation follows a separate 2025 contribution from another member of Ratat’s team, who donated hundreds of historical photographs related to Japan’s invasion of China.
