French police have launched an investigation into the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. The platform is suspected of two main offenses: disrupting automated data systems and illegally extracting data, both allegedly carried out by an organized group. The Directorate-General of the National Gendarmerie is handling the case.
The investigation stems from two complaints filed in January—one by a French MP and the other by a senior public official—accusing X’s algorithm of being manipulated for foreign interference. Authorities began examining the complaints in February and officially opened the investigation after receiving supporting evidence from researchers and public institutions.
