French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou unveiled a new, streamlined government with 14 full ministries on Monday, appointing former prime ministers Manuel Valls and Elisabeth Borne to key roles. Valls will oversee the Ministry of Overseas Territories, and Borne will lead the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education, and Research.
Key ministers retained from the previous administration include Bruno Retailleau (Interior), Sebastian Lecornu (Armed Forces), and Jean-Noel Barrot (Europe and Foreign Affairs). Notable female appointees include Rachida Dati (Culture), Catherine Vautrin (Work, Health, Solidarities, and Families), Agnes Pannier-Runacher (Ecological Transition), and Annie Genevard (Agriculture).
Eric Lombard has been appointed as minister of economy, finance, and industrial and digital sovereignty to draft the 2025 budget. Bayrou called the cabinet a “collective of experience” aimed at rebuilding trust with French citizens.
The announcement follows Bayrou’s appointment as prime minister on December 13, after Michel Barnier was ousted in a no-confidence vote. The first Council of Ministers meeting is set for January 3, 2025.
