French government survives no-confidence vote over heatwave response

The French government has survived a no-confidence vote after lawmakers rejected a motion criticizing its response to the deadly June heatwave. The motion, backed by Green, left-wing and hard-left lawmakers, accused Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu’s government of not doing enough to protect people during the record-breaking temperatures.

The motion received 132 votes in France’s National Assembly, falling well short of the 289 votes needed to remove the government from power.
