French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled a new government led by Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu on Sunday, the premier’s second attempt to form a cabinet capable of navigating a severe political crisis. The new team faces an immediate challenge to present the 2026 draft austerity budget before a Tuesday deadline, despite facing a hostile and divided parliament that has already toppled Lecornu’s two predecessors. The crisis began after Macron’s snap polls last year resulted in a hung parliament and gains for the far right. Key appointments include Jean-Noel Barrot as Foreign Minister, Catherine Vautrin taking the Defence portfolio, and Roland Lescure in charge of the Economy. Opponents across the political spectrum, including the leftist Socialists and the far-right National Rally, have vowed to oust the government, with even the key right-wing ally, the Republicans, pledging only “bill-by-bill” cooperation.
