French President Emmanuel Macron said France supports closer ties between Canada and the European Union, including the possibility of Canada becoming the EU’s first “associate member.” The proposed partnership would expand cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, defense, energy, critical minerals and the Arctic.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also backed stronger cooperation, describing it as an “Alliance for the Future.” The idea has drawn criticism from US President Donald Trump, who said closer Canada-EU ties could be considered a “hostile act” and threatened tariffs on Europe.
