The French Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, has raised the country’s security alert to the highest level after a knife-wielding assailant fatally attacked a teacher and injured three others at Gambetta High School in Arras. The incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. local time. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced the mobilization of additional security personnel to monitor public gathering places.
The suspect, approximately 20 years old, had previously been flagged for radicalization by French security services. Despite surveillance on the suspect’s phone in the days leading up to the attack, there was no indication of a planned assault. The assailant, a former student of the school, first targeted a teacher outside the school, then attacked another person who tried to intervene. Once inside the building, the perpetrator injured two more individuals who were working at the school.
