Former senior minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam has been elected as Singapore’s ninth president, securing 70.4% of the total votes in the presidential election. His rivals, Ng Kok Song and Tan Kin Lian, received 15.72% and 13.88% of the votes respectively. Over 2.48 million Singaporeans participated in the election. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, previously a prominent member of the ruling People’s Action Party, emphasized his independence after resigning from the party earlier in the year.
The role of the president in Singapore is primarily ceremonial, but it involves overseeing the country’s significant but undisclosed reserves and holding veto powers over budgetary matters and key appointments. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has congratulated Tharman Shanmugaratnam and expressed readiness for full cooperation with the new president.
