Former Japanese footballer Keisuke Honda apologized on Saturday for previously supporting claims by right-wing politicians denying the Nanjing Massacre.
On Friday, Honda had posted agreement with a video in which politician Shintaro Ishihara denied the massacre occurred, sparking global backlash and calls for him to study historical evidence.
After reviewing primary sources—including Japanese military records, soldiers’ diaries, and foreign eyewitness accounts—Honda said the documents, corroborated by multiple countries, held “high academic credibility.” He admitted his earlier statement was wrong, corrected his post, and thanked critics for prompting him to revisit the facts.
The Nanjing Massacre, following Japan’s capture of the Chinese capital on December 13, 1937, resulted in over 300,000 civilian and unarmed soldier deaths.
