The foreign ministers of China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand met in Anning, Yunnan Province, on August 15. All sides pledged support for Myanmar’s stability and cooperation against cross-border crimes.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed a “Myanmar-led, Myanmar-owned” approach, urging dialogue to resolve differences, while stressing ASEAN’s role as the main channel for mediation. He also highlighted the need to focus on people’s livelihoods, post-quake reconstruction, and to guard against outside interference that could affect regional stability.
Myanmar’s foreign minister U Than Swe thanked neighboring countries for their support and said Myanmar is preparing for transparent elections by year-end to return power to the people. Laos and Thailand also expressed support for Myanmar’s political process, with Thailand emphasizing ASEAN cooperation under the principle of non-interference.
The ministers also agreed to strengthen cooperation against cross-border crimes, including online gambling, telecom fraud, drug and arms trafficking, and human trafficking, through joint operations, border control, and capacity building.
