The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, proposed by China 70 years ago, have become key norms for international peace and friendly relations. At a recent conference, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized their importance in building a community with a shared future for mankind and promoting peaceful development.
First proposed by Premier Zhou Enlai in 1954, the principles include mutual respect for sovereignty, non-aggression, non-interference, equality, and peaceful coexistence. Xi highlighted their enduring relevance and China’s commitment to peaceful development, including pledging no first use of nuclear weapons.
The principles also guide Global South cooperation, exemplified by China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects like the China-Laos Railway and Kenya’s Mombasa-Nairobi Railway. Xi announced support for the Global South, including training opportunities and trade arrangements, urging openness and inclusivity to build a shared future.
