A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other senior officials experienced a “hard landing” in Varzaqan County, East Azerbaijan, due to bad weather. The exact location of the incident is within a 2 km radius but remains undetermined. Contact has been made with some passengers, but the whereabouts of key officials, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and East Azerbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati, are unclear.
Rescue efforts, hindered by low temperatures and rain, involve the Iranian Red Crescent Society, police, army, and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps. The president’s convoy of three helicopters lost contact about 30 minutes after takeoff, leading to emergency landings by the other two helicopters. Drones are aiding in the search due to difficult terrain and weather.
President Raisi was en route from Khoda Afarin County to Tabriz for an inauguration. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and regional countries, including Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, have offered support and assistance.
